Detailed itinerary

Day 1 Arrival at Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan. Transfer to the hotel. Overnight in Yerevan.

Day 2 Yerevan City Tour

Yerevan is the pink “pearl” of Armenia. This beautiful European city is mostly built by different shades of pink stone called “tuf” quarried in Armenia. Founded in 782B.C. Yerevan is reputedly one of the oldest cities in the world to have been continuously inhabited. The city is located under the gaze of the biblical Mount Ararat where the Noah’s ark landed. We start our exploration with the Republic Square with it magnificent buildings enhanced by singing fountains. Walking down the Abovyan Street, one of the oldest streets in Yerevan which was on the Silk Road,we continue to Northern Avenue, Opera House, Cascade, Grand Bazaar. A cultural showcase not to be missed is Matenadaran, one of the world’s largest and oldest repositories of Armenian manuscripts. Laterwe’ll visit the most impressive museum of Armenia – Sergey Parajanov house museum, one of the greatest figures of 20th-century world cinema. Overnight in Yerevan.

Day 3 Yerevan /Garni/Geghard/Yerevan

Leaving the frantic pace of the city we are heading towards Garni Pagan Temple, the only Hellenistic Temple in the Caucasus. The Pagan Temple of Garni is the only pagan temple currently standing in Armenia. Gracing the hillside the pagan temple was dedicated to the God of Sun, Mithra. It was built in 77A.D. Proceed to Geghard Monastery (UNESCO) carved out of a huge monolithic rock. Geghard is an incredible ancient Armenian monastery, partly carved out of a mountain. It is said that the Holy Lance that pierced the body of Christ was kept here. The architectural forms and the decoration of Geghard's rock premises show that Armenian builders could not only create superb works of architecture out of stone, but also hew them in solid rock. Back to Garni village. Visiting a local house in Garni village. Traditional Armenian bread-lavash making in tonir (underground earth-stove). Overnight in Yerevan.

Day 4 Yerevan/KhorVirap/Areni/Noravank/Yerevan

Early morning departure from Yerevan. The first stop of our trip is KhorVirap, the most sacred pilgrimage destination in Armenia. Guided by the remote majesty of biblical mount Ararat, we explore the site, its underground chambers, elegant chapels and are captivated by the ascetic atmosphere of the site. We continue to the south driving through the agricultural heart of Armenia, Ararat Plain offering a fantastic scenery of fruit orchards, endless vineyards at the foothills of Ararat Mountain where the Noah’s ark landed. As soon as the we pass the Ararat Plain we can experience the untamed beauty of Southern Armenia - surreal red rocks providing an eerie echo, honey-coloured villages sandwiched between them. Our next stop is the Monastery of Noravank, an architectural gemstone nestled among brick-red cliffs, just above a deep gorge. Later we’ll drive back to Areni village, the cradle of viticulture! This is where world’s ancient winery was found (about 6000years old). Winery tour and wine tasting. Overnight in Yerevan.

Day 5 Yerevan/Lake Sevan/Dilijan

We tour around the Lake Sevan (60km far from Yerevan), a huge mountainous lake which takes up almost 5% of the country’s surface area. It’s one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the world situated at 1900m above sea level . On a clear and sunny day, the water is often deep turquoise color. Then we continue to Dilijan National Park. Many poets used to say, "If there are woods, mountains, streams and mineral waters in paradise, it must be like Dilijan”. As a climatic balneal health centre of medium-mountain zone, Dilijan is characterized by mild, moderate warm summer, sunny warm winter and dry warm weather during the whole year. Take a stroll in the most beautiful part of the town, Old Dilijan Complex. Here we experience the town as it was in the 19th century. We visit Goshavank fairy-tale monastery set amidst flower-filled meadows. Here you’ll see the most beautiful Armenian stone-cross from 1291, an exquisite needlework masterpiece. Hotel check in. Overnight in Dilijan.

Day 6 Dilijan/Haghpat/Tbilisi - GEORGIA

Driving through the Russian Old believers’ villages and picturesque Canyon of Debed River we visit the Monastery of Haghpat dating back to the 10th century. It’s a perfect example of medieval Armenian architecture. Being astonishingly well preserved with its frescoes, “lace” stone-crosses, inscriptions and bas-relieves it became the first Armenian architectural monument to be included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.Drive to Sadakhlo Georgian – Armenian border. Change buses and guides. Continue to Tbilisi. City Tour in Tbilisi. Tbilisi today is one of the most modern and cosmopolitan cities in the Caucasus. Since that time the city has been destroyed and rebuilt on nearly 30 different occasions following a long history of fighting off Persian, Arab, Turkmen, Mongol, Turk and, finally, Russian invaders. We begin our tour with a visit to Old Tbilisi town with its "Sulfur Baths" district, Georgian Orthodox and Armenian Gregorian churches, and a Jewish synagogue and a Turkish mosque side by side, reflecting Tbilisi's acceptance and tolerance of different religions. Then we'll continue our sightseeing with a visit to the Fortress of Narikala and its St. Nikolas Church. We can walk up the stairs of the fortress in order to get a "bird-eye" view of the magical city of Tbilisi. We’ll stroll down Rustaveli Avenue, the main thoroughfare running east through the city. Overnight in Tbilisi.

Day 7 Tbilisi/Mtskheta/Ananuri/Gudauri

Today we will drive north along the Georgian Military Highway, linking Georgia with Russia into the mountainous provinces of the Greater Caucasus. The first stop of our tour will be in sacred Mtskheta (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the ancient capital of eastern Georgia, at the southern end of the highway. Georgia conversion to Christianity took place in Mtskheta in 337 AD. We will visit Church of Jvari perched on a cliff overlooking the city, the Sveti-Tskhoveli Cathedral, the first Christian church to be built in Georgia and its largest functioning cathedral and the Samtavro Monastery complex. Continuing our journey into the mountains, we will stop in Ananuri to see the incredible 16th century fortress complex built by the warring dukes of Aragvi in an attempt to control the main road. An optional tour to Gergeti Trinity church at Mount Kazbek. Overnight in Gudauri ski resort town.

Day 8 Gudauri/Gori/Uplistsikhe/Tbilisi

We journey down from the mountains today stopping atSamtavisi Georgian Orthodox cathedral (11th century). The Assyrian missionary Isidore founded the first monastery here in 572A.D. We continue to the town of Gori, founded by one of the greatest kings of Georgia, David the Builder in the 12th century. Visit the house museum of Joseph Stalin in Gori as this town is the house birthplace of the dictator. The town will also provide a convenient jumping off point for our explorations of nearby Uplis-Tsikhe, an ancient cave town dating from the first half of the 1st millennium BC. The entire town is a complex of rock-cut streets, residences, churches, secret tunnels, water passages, markets and the oldest theatre in Georgia. Though there are about 700 caves the visitor have access to only 150 of them. Drive to Tbilisi. Overnight in Tbilisi.

Day 9 Tbilisi/Signagi/Tbilisi

Today we visit Sighnaghi – “the love town” in the wine region of Kakheti. It is located on the eastern part of Georgia, bordered by the small mountains province of Tusheti and mountain-range of Greater Caucasus to the north. Here we’ll visit Bodbe monastery of St. Nino. Her tomb is still shown at the Bodbe Monastery. St. Nino has become one of the most venerated saints of the Georgian Orthodox Church and her attribute, a Grapevine cross, is a symbol of Georgian Christianity. Drive to Tbilisi. Overnight in Tbilisi.

Day10 Departure

Transfer to airport. Departure from Tbilisi.

1ST DAY: ARRIVAL.

Arrival in Yerevan, meeting at the airport, transfer to the hotel, leisure time.

2ND DAY: CITY-TOUR – THE HISTORICAL MUSEUM – MATENADARA – “COVERED BAZAAR”.

Breakfast at hotel. Sightseeing tour across Yerevan.Opera house, Republic Square, Northen Avenue… 10.30. Visit of the Historical State museum of Armenia. This museum contains the rich collection of artifacts covering rather big period of time from the Stone Age (about 1 million years ago) till our time. Visitors can see unique proofs of cultural relationships of the ancient Armenians with such countries as Egypt, Iran, Assyria, Rome, Byzantium, etc. Also there is the richest collection of products from bronze relating to the 2nd and 3rd millennia BC. One of displays at the exhibition of the museum contains artifacts of Urartu - the powerful Armenian state in the territory of the Middle East. Bronze figurines, cuneiform inscriptions, wall inscriptions, pottery with jewelry, weapon copies with sculptures, from gold, silver and an ivory concern to her. One more unique exhibition of this museum is the huge collection of the coins which are let out during the period from 3rd century BC to the 14th century AD in various states which once existed in the territory of modern Armenia. 13.00.. - Lunch in Armenian restaurant. After lunch visiting Matenadaran – one of the largest storages of manuscripts in the world, about 18.000 manuscripts. The chronological sequence of placement of exhibits represents national written culture, since an era of emergence of writing up to the XIX century. Then visit to the “Covered” Bazaar known as “Pak Shuka” on Mashtots Avenue.It’s a real museum of food. The entrance is an amazing artwork in its own right, a massive semicircular iron structure with intricate detail – a masterpiece. You are greeted by vendors of all types asking you to sample their goods – from delicious homemade dried fruits stuffed with nuts, paper thin fruit ‘lavash’, ‘sujukh’ (local walnuts threaded on string and dipped in grape molasses! Simply yum!) right through to fresh ‘lavash’ bread and organic fruit and vegetables and stalls selling herbs and spices you will use during the cooking class. Return to the hotel.

3RD DAY: CASCADE - THE CENTER OF ARTS GAFESCHYAN – MEGERIAN CARPET F MUSEUM- MASTER CLASS IN COOKING ARMENIAN DISH .

Breakfast at hotel. The building that now houses the Cafesjian Center for the Arts is well known to the Armenian people, especially those living in its capital city of Yerevan. Known as “The Cascade,” the complex was originally conceived by the architect Alexander Tamanyan (1878–1936). 10.30. Visit of the Center of Arts Gafeschyan where the best collections of modern works of world art are presented. The center offers a big variety of the exhibitions organized from Gerrard L. Gafeschyan's Collection – one of the largest collectors of the western modern art. 12.00. - Visit to “Megerian Carpet” factory. The Megerian Family has been involved in selling, restoration and production of fine rugs for over four generations. Visitors and guests are welcome to watch the production of the rugs which involve dyeing of the yarns by using vegetable dyes, weaving, shearing, finishing, etc… The guest also have the opportunity to enjoy Armenian national show with dances and music, as well as taste traditional Armenian dishes in the small lovely hall of the factory. Enjoy a unique experience worth remembering! 13.30. - Lunch and a cooking class. Our cooking class is focused on one of the traditional Armenian meal – Ghapama with Sedrak Mamulyan, a well-known chef, leader of Armenian Cuisine Revival Association. Ghapama is a stuffed pumpkin with rice and dried fruits. While preparing the dish, we can sing a song dedicated to ghapama: “Hey jan, ghapama, hamov, hotov ghapama (hey dear ghapama, with flavor and aroma ghapama Return to the hotel. 4TH DAY: SERGEY PARADJANOV MUSEUM - ECHMIADZIN – THE CATHEDRAL TREASURY -ZVARTNOTC – THE MARKET OF ARTS "VERNISAZH"

Breakfast at hotel. 10.00. The day starts with a visit to the Sergej Paradjanov Museum is a tribute to one of the greatest figures of 20th-century world cinema. Parajanov’s visionary films, such as “The Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors,” “Sayat-Nova,” and “The Legend of Suram Fortress,” earned him international acclaim and led to lifelong persecution by the Soviet regime. Next stop is Etchmiadzin Cathedral - the mother church of the Armenian Apostolic Church, located in the city of Vagharshapat/Etchmiadzin. Visit of the museum of treasures in the Cathedral. As well, you have a visit to Saint Hripsime Church - a seventh Armenian Apostolic century church. Not to be missed visit to “Machanents” Art and Tourism Center. Here you participate in “Dolma making” master-class. Armenian tolma is made of minced meat, onion, rice, different types of spices all mixed together. Later the stuffing is rolled up in grape leaves. Tolma may also be made with cabbage leaves – especially for vegetarian dolma served during the Easter Fast. Lunch in the same centre. Proceed to the Ruins of Zvartnots- the 7th century architecture listed as a UNESCO World Heritage. Come back to Yerevan. Return to hotel.

5TH DAY: KHOR VIRAP – NORAVANK - ARENI

Breakfast at hotel. 09.30 Drive to Khor Virap - an Armenian monastery located in the Ararat plain in Armenia. Khor Virap's notability as a monastery and pilgrimage site is attributed to the fact that Gregory the Illuminator, was initially imprisoned here for 14 years by King Tiridates III of Armenia. Visit to Areni wine factory with wine degustation. Lunch at the restaurant, where you will taste Armenian "qyufta" with wheat and mushrooms. Qyufta is a dish which is prepared with the meatball is ground or minced meat rolled into a small ball, sometimes along with other ingredients, such as bread crumbs, minced onion, eggs, butter and seasoning. Return to Yerevan. Free time for shopping in Armenian traditional market. Return to hotel. Not to be missed visit to “Machanents” Art and Tourism Center. Here you participate in “Dolma making” master-class. Armenian tolma is made of minced meat, onion, rice, different types of spices all mixed together. Later the stuffing is rolled up in grape leaves. 6TH DAY: GARNI - GEGHARD – ARARAT BRANDY FACTORY

Breakfast at hotel. 10.00. The trip begins from Garni Pagan Temple. On the road have a visit to the Arch of Charents. From which opens a breathtaking view of the Ararat valley with Ararat soaring on the horizon. 13.00. -Llunch and master class in baking Armenian flat bread “lavash” Continue to Geghard Monastery - a medieval monastery being partially carved out of the adjacent mountain, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Come back to Yerevan. 17.00. - We’ll visit the oldest winery in Armenia, YEREVAN ARARAT BRANDY-WINE FACTORY founded in 1877 built on the place of the destroyed Yerevan fortress. During the tour you’ll visit the distillation department, the cooperage department, the museum, the wine-cellar in the basement where you can see a wall from Yerevan fortress and its secret passages. Tasting two wine varieties from 1924 and 1944 and two cognac varieties of 10 and 20 years’ maturity. Return to hotel.

7TH DAY:SEVAN – DILIJAN - TSAKHKADZOR

10.00. After breakfast we are off to the most beautiful forested area of Armenia, Dilijan National Park driving by the fascinating lake Sevan located at 1900m above sea level, the 2nd largest high altitude lake in the world. Words alone can’t describe the natural beauty of Dilijan. Many poets used to say, "If there are woods, mountains, streams and mineral waters in paradise, it must be like Dilijan”. 13.00. Lunch un Dilijan As a climatic balneal health centre of medium-mountain zone, Dilijan is characterized by mild, moderate warm summer, sunny warm winter and dry warm weather during the whole year. Due to its forested mountains and mild climate, Dilijan is named "Armenia's Little Switzerland". Take a stroll in the most beautiful part of the town, Old Dilijan Complex on historic Shamambertan street. Here we experience the town as it was in the 19th century. Then we continue our journey through Dilijan National Park, a protected area renowned for its serene lakes, picturesque hill trails and peaceful villages, visit to Haghartsin and Goshavank, fairy-tale monasteries set amidst flower-filled meadows. Founded in the 12th century both monasteries were very important spiritual, cultural and educational center in the medieval Armenia. On the way to Yerevan visit the town of Tsaghkadzor, the biggest ski resort of Armenia with forests. In the summertime, people go there to get away from the city life of Yerevan, and the heat, for the fresh air in the mountains. In the winter, the town is completely overtaken by skiers and people who just want to relax and enjoy the snow and scenery. The modern rope-way will take you to the top of Teghenis Mountain, where the greens of land and the blue of the sky get in fusion. The town was the main training ground of the USSR Olympic Games’ sportsmen for winter sports. Return to hotel.

8TH DAY: DEPARTURE.

2nd Day: Yerevan City Tour

Breakfast at hotel. First, you will be introduced with the whole panorama of the Yerevan city region. You will see the ruins of the fortress Erebuni founded in 782 BC and Erebuni museum; visit to very impressive monument – the Memorial of Victims of Genocide in 1915; visit Matenadaran - one of the biggest depositors of ancient manuscripts, pride of entire Armenian culture.Back to the hotel.

3rd Day: Garni – Geghard - Yerevan brandy factory

Breakfast at hotel. Trip to Garni. The Sun Temple of Garni is one of the most ancient structures on Armenian territory. The Garni architectural complex was the summer residence of Armenian kings. The Gerhard Monastery is a fantastic sample of medieval Armenian architecture. The most original parts of the complex are two churches in the depth of the rock.Then you will visit Yerevan brandy factory. The chance will take you to the fairyland of world-famous Armenian brandy. You will discover what the living legend of the Armenian brandy really is.Back to the hotel.

4th Day: Echmiadzin – Zvartnots

Breakfast at hotel. Trip to Echmiadzin (the center of Armenian Apostolic Church), visiting the Echmiadzin Cathedral, the most ancient Christian Temple in Armenia and the Holy See of the Armenian Apostolic Church. A short walk from the Cathedral will bring you to the St. Hripsime and Gayane Churches (7th century).On the way back visiting Zvartnots Temple (7th century).Back to the hotel.

5th Day: Tsakhkadzor – Sevan

Breakfast at hotel. Trip to Tsakhkadzor sport complex, visiting Kecharis Monastery; cable car (funicular). On the way back to Yerevan visiting Lake Sevan, “the pearl of Armenia”, which is situated at an altitude of almost 2000 m. above sea level.Visiting Churches St. Karapet and Arakelots on the peninsula.Back to the hotel.

6th Day: KhorVirap - Noravank

Breakfast at hotel. Trip to KhorVirap Monastery, St. Gregory Illuminators underground pit (the Catholics of all Armenians). On the edge of twisting gorge of the river Arpa, among fantastic masses of the red cliffs is situated Noravank Monastery Complex.In the village “Areni” you can taste fine red wine, which made of the same sort of grapes from Eghegnadzor region. Back to the hotel.

7th Day: ASHTARAK - AMBERD

Breakfast at the hotel. Trip to Ashtarak district, which lies at the foot of Mt. Aragats – the highest mountain in Armenia (4090 m). The Churches of Karmravor and Tsiranavor (5th century) are the oldest structures to be found these parts. A short walk will bring you to Karmravor, St. Marine and St. Sargis churches. Then you will visit Amberd castle. Back to the hotel.

8th Day: Departure

Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the airport. Departure home.

    6th Day: KhorVirap - Noravank

Zorats Kar or Karahunge (Power Stone) believed to be an ancient observatory quite similar to Stonehenge in England. The columns sit like soldiers on a hill, huddled in formation. The 204 stones near Sisian have been ascribed with mystical, fertility and cosmic powers, but rarely have ancient monuments caused such a sensation in astronomical circles. Trip to Goris, where we stay for 1 night in “Mirhav” hotel.

    5th Day: GORIS- TATEV- KHNDORESK- -GORIS

    Breakfast at hotel.09.30. In order to reach the Tatev monastery complex, a fortress veiled by many mysterious legends, we need to “take a ride” on a cable car which travels at a speed of 37 km/h (23 mi). At its highest point over the gorge, the car travels 320 m (1,050 ft) above ground level. It is the longest reversible aerial tramway in the world in length over five kilometres recorded in the Guinness World Records book. In the second half of the day, the journey leads us to a cave city Chndzoresk above the town Goris. Trip to Zorats Karer, archeologically precious site called by many “Armenian Stonehenge” however older by more than two thousand years than its English fellow. Back to “Mirhav hotel”. Overnight in Goris.

    6th Day: Goris – SELIM PASS - sevan- Dilijan

    Breakfast at hotel.09.00. Check-out. Drive to Sevan Lake via Selim pass.Selim (Sulema) pass and Caravanserai. From the days of Marco Polo and the Silk Road (from China to Europe) Medieval Armenia was a major thoroughfare for merchants, traders, and explorers alike. Weary travelers would look forward for a rest at one of many inns or caravansaries along the way. The Selim Caravanserai constructed in 1332 and situated in the Selim (Sulema) mountain pass on the border of Gegharkunik is one of the best preserved. The Caravanserai lies below the road just before the summit on the south side of Selim Pass (2410 m). Sevan, this wonder of nature, is 60 Km from Yerevan on a highway which cuts northward through mountains and rocks. Sevan is so austere and majestic that the gentle turquoise waters are astonishing. They fill the gigantic depression situated at the height of almost 2000 m above sea level. Trip to Dilijan, Overnight.

    7th Day: DILIJAN – HAGHARDZIN – GOSHAVANK – HAGHPAT – SANAHIN - YEREVAN

    09.00.Check-out. Trip to Haghardzin Monastery – monastery built in 12th, and also St Astvatsatsin church built in 1281 year- a large number of khachkars, grave tombs and chapels have remained around the monastery and the church. Goshavank complex built in 12-13thcents. It is also known as Nor-Getik architectural complex, a famous cultural center of medieval Armenia. The grave with ''lacy '' khachkar of antiquity scientist Mkhitar Gosh is situated here. Trip to Monastery Complex of Haghpat (UNESCO World Heritage).The construction of this monastery is associated to the glory of the Bagratouni Royal Family. The oldest structure of the monastery was built in 977-991 and was called the Holy Cross church. Holy water fills the small pool in the church. Believers say this water has curative qualities for people with poor health. Many cross-stones are built on the ground of the churches. A three-storied bell tower built in 1245 is part of the complex. Monastery Complex of Sanahin (UNESCO World Heritage).Sanahin is a monastery complex the most prominent structure of which is the Savor's Church (956-967), built by architect Trdat for princes Gourgen and Smbat from the Kyurikian Kingdom. The eastern part of the church holds a bas-relief depicting the two princes holding the miniature copy of the actual church. The former village of Sanahin is located on the right side of the gorge. It has become a part of the town of Alaverdi. An interesting point is the Academy dating back to 1063, where famous scientist, philosopher and writer Grigor Magistros-Savor lectured.
